History of the Discipline
Jürgen Wendler
Phoniatrics is, as to the current definition of the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) and the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), the medical field for communication disorders, concerned with functions and diseases of voice, speech, language, hearing (especially in so far as hearing impairment has its effects on any of the areas previously mentioned), and swallowing. In practice, phoniatrics is a multidisciplinary specialty combining information from medical and non-medical sciences. In addition to general medical investigations and treatment procedures, phoniatrics encloses complex competencies in the fields of cognition, learning abilities, psychological behavior, and rehabilitation procedures. The most important medical fields for the clinical practice are otorhinolaryngology (ENT), neurology, neuropediatrics, (child) psychiatry, pediatrics, radiology, genetics, endocrinology, dentistry, gerontology, and musicians’ medicine. On the other hand, the fundamentals of many non-medical disciplines as, for instance, linguistics, phonetics, (neuro-) psychology, pedagogy, acoustics, information and communication sciences are also necessary to be included in phoniatric training programs [42].
The following overview of the history of this discipline is based on these integrative interrelations. At the same time, it has to be stressed that the profile of phoniatrics as a medical specialty has always to be determined with reference to the aspects of disease and healthiness in terms of specific approaches to clinical understanding, diagnostics, and therapy of communication disorders.

Horace Green, New York, published in 1852, according to the historical overview of Steven Zeitels in Bob Sataloff’s big textbook (with an excellent chapter on Voice Surgery by the editor himself) the first report of an excision of a polypoid mass from the laryngeal ventricle area of an 11 years old girl by direct laryngoscopy, using a bent tongue spatula under sunlight. But, the reason was airway obstruction, not the voice. …
